Calibre and Kobo: send books and keep your library tidy

Connect the Kobo to Calibre

1. Open Calibre on your computer.
2. Plug the Kobo in with a USB cable.
3. On the Kobo, tap Connect when it asks whether to connect to the computer.
4. Calibre shows a Device tab in the toolbar. That tab is the contents of the Kobo, not your Calibre library.

If nothing appears, try another cable first. Many USB cables only carry power, and a power-only cable will charge the Kobo without ever showing the connect prompt.

Send books to the device

1. Select one or more books in your Calibre library.
2. Click Send to device.
3. Wait until the transfer finishes, then eject the Kobo safely.
4. The Kobo processes the new files when you disconnect. Give it a moment before the books show up in your home screen.

Kobo also reads a variant format called KEPUB. It is optional, but it enables Kobo reading statistics and page numbers for sideloaded books. The community plugin KoboTouchExtended can convert EPUB to KEPUB automatically at send time.

Fix the metadata before you send

This is the part people skip, and it is the part that decides whether your Kobo looks organised. The device has no catalogue of its own for sideloaded books: it displays the title, author and series fields stored inside the file.

• Author: keep one spelling. "J.R.R. Tolkien" and "JRR Tolkien" become two separate authors on the device.
• Series and series index: fill both. Without the number, book 2 and book 10 sort alphabetically instead of in reading order.
• Title: drop the file noise. Volume tags, scan notes and retailer suffixes all end up on your shelf.
• Cover: a missing cover inside the file is a grey placeholder on the Kobo.

In Calibre this is Edit metadata, either per book or in bulk for a whole series at once. Download metadata can fill most of it, but check the series index, because that is the field that is most often wrong or empty.

What Calibre cannot tell you

Calibre manages the files you already have. It does not tell you which book in a series you never bought, which series you stopped halfway through, or which sequel is coming out next.

That is what Kobbie does. You plug the Kobo into Chrome or Edge, Kobbie reads the device library index read-only in your browser, groups everything into series in reading order, and shows the gaps: books you own but never started, series with a missing sequel, and confirmed upcoming releases. Nothing changes on the device unless you approve that specific change.
